The 5 types of entrepreneur

by Iliana Paleva

We work with many entrepreneurs and are always looking to meet new ones. Throughout the years, we have noticed several types of entrepreneurs - each of which has strengths and weaknesses. Which type of entrepreneur are you?

The Strategic

This type of entrepreneur is very organized, clear and realistic about what they want to build and bring to market. Oftentimes, they have done a lot of customer discovery, market research and are familiar with the industry. They are not afraid to minimize scope, while also prioritizing the most important features. They often have tangible goals, a clear go-to-market strategy and relentless drive.

Strengths: Based on our experience, this is one of the most successful types of entrepreneurs. Having clear, achievable and short-term goals is one of the most important traits you can exhibit when building your first product.

Weaknesses: This type tends to be a bit too rigid and not open to feedback. They don’t always keep an open mind about alternative solutions.

The Dreamer

This type of entrepreneur has big, bold dreams and ideas - so big that they might never reach them.

Strengths: Having a big “why” and dreams is incredible, and helps entrepreneurs stay motivated and creative. This type is also open to new ideas, which is important before the product-market fit.

Weaknesses: Having new ideas all the time, without following a plan, causes them to jump from one idea to another, resulting in too many unfinished tasks.

The Corporate

This type is used to a corporate setting and wouldn’t have it any other way. Emails and communication is kept strictly within the hours of 9-5, and they are not afraid to leave some tasks for another day.

Strengths: They have a to-do list and will do what needs to be done on time.

Weaknesses: Not always open to new ideas, not being flexible and sometimes relying too much on others to guide them.

The Passive

This is the type of entrepreneur who doesn’t realize just how much time, effort and money it takes to build and sustain a digital product. By trying to take the shortcut and offload their responsibilities to everyone else, the passive entrepreneur is just waiting for the millions to start flowing... until they don’t. Being an entrepreneur requires your full attention and involvement - if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it. If you are starting a business, and it’s your idea - most likely other people will not be on fire about it as much as you are. Be the driving force at the beginning instead.

Strengths: This type is not a micromanager and is not afraid to give others more responsibility. Building and trusting a team is a key component when growing a business.

Weaknesses: Not leading your team into your vision, and not taking the wheel to drive your project to the place it needs to be oftentimes results in failure.

The Panicked

This is the type that considers every single “issue” - whether small or big - to be worthy of a 911 call. And in reality, that’s rarely the case. In fact, most things are not even an issue in the grand scheme of things. Starting a business, building a digital product and leading a team will without a doubt have roadblocks. Focusing on how to solve them, rather than panicking, is always the right approach.

Strengths: This type will catch any true issues early on, helping find a solution right away.

Weaknesses: This type tends to lose patience or change strategy way too often. This prevents them from following through on an idea, and seeing a project come to life.
